Top 5 tips for expats moving to Sydney

Surrounded by the coastline on the east and rich forest on the west, you can go surfing in the morning and bushwalking in the afternoon, the lifestyle choices in Sydney are abundant.

Below are the top 5 insider tips for expats moving to Auckland

Finding a place to live
Accommodation in Sydney is competitive and highly priced. The closer you are to the city centre, the more you should expect to pay for housing. The outer suburbs do provide more affordable options but as the city is where the majority of professionals work you have to be prepared for a longer commute.

Getting around Sydney
Public transport is recommended for commuting as traffic congestion during the morning and evening peak hour is high. If you are close to the city, the bus and train system are readily available and sufficient to get around. Those living in the suburbs will need a car to travel.

Access to healthcare
Australia’s Medicare system provides mostly free healthcare for residents. It is advisable that you check whether you will be able to access the healthcare system based on your visa type. To avoid long waiting lists it is recommended that expats take out private health cover.

Cost of living
Although salaries in Sydney are the highest in the country, the cost of living is also comparatively high. A large contributor to this is housing and if you are willing to live further from the city your household income will go further.

Get ready to BBQ
Australians love to BBQ. It is a big part of Australian social culture. From the bacon in the morning to sausages at lunch or steak for dinner, the BBQ is a staple. Don’t be surprised when invited for a weekend BBQ lunch, this is a regular occurrence in Sydney.
