Personal Tax in Auckland

The US based firm Tax Foundation has ranked New Zealand’s tax system as second in the developed world for competitiveness and first for its personal taxes.

The amount of personal tax payable in New Zealand depends on whether a taxpayer is considered a resident for tax purposes.

A person is a tax resident if they are in New Zealand for more than 183 days in any 12 month period and have not become a non-resident or they have a permanent place of abode in New Zealand. Persons away from New Zealand in the service of the New Zealand government are also considered tax residents.

The personal tax rate on salary and wages income ranges from between 10.5% for income up to $14,000.00 and 33% for income over $ 70,000.00. New Zealand does not have an inheritance tax, general capital gains tax (except for specific investment types), payroll tax or social security tax.
